We speak to Jenny, the founder of Jin Xuan Florist; she reveals the magic behind the NoWater Flowers.
和Jenny一聊,我就能感觉到她多么实在。她的话语直白而未经雕琢,显然不是一个善于公关说辞的人,但她的热情和真诚让人眼前一亮。她直言不讳创业压力,也承认自己不是一个天生的企业家,但对所有新事物自然的好奇心一直驱动着她前进。
Speaking to Jenny from Jinxuan Flowers, you immediately feel how genuine she is. She’s unpolished and clearly not a PR person, but her warmth and honesty really shine through. She’s vocal about the stresses and strains of entrepreneurship, and by her own admission isn’t a natural business person, but her natural curiosity of all things new keeps her motivated.

Tell me about your product?
我们的花很棒,号称魔法花种。它从球根(bulb)长出,不需要水和阳光。长出花朵需要大约3周,开花期在3~6周之间。我们的零售价在268 / 299元每株,网上销售,并在生活方式类的社交媒体推广。
We have this really amazing flower, called the NoWater Flowers which grow from a bulb, without needing water or sunlight. It takes around 3 weeks to flower, and the blooms last between 3-6 weeks. We retail them at 268/299RMB per bulb, and sell through online channels and market through lifestyle social media.

Is this your passion?
不完全是因为对花有爱,而是对一切新事物的强烈好奇心。我觉得这个产品很独特,让我兴奋。我同时认为这是一个还没开发的市场,有很多机会。另外,我希望大家把鲜花看成轻奢生活方式的礼物而不是仅仅一株植物。中国人物质越发富足,那精神上的愉悦满足怎么办?我们的花正好能解决这点。
It’s not passion for flowers exactly, but more intense curiosity about anything new. I think this product is so unique and it excites me. I also think it’s a relatively empty market so there’s a lot of opportunity. Additionally, I want people to see flowers as semi-luxury lifestyle gifts rather than just as a plant – as China gets wealthier, people think about addressing mental fulfilment, and I think our flowers give that.
你是怎样一路走过来的?
You Business Journey
我们创立于2017年7月,在9月开始销售产品。我无意间在荷兰的花展发现了这种花。我有汽车设计和用户体验的学术背景,后者对营销和产品展示很有帮助。我们的市场仍然主要是北京和上海,但我们正在打开更多渠道和分销。未来,我希望通过不断探索新颖独特的产品来扩展业务,并提供给现有客户。
We started as a company in July 2017, and started selling our products in September. I inadvertently discovered the Nowaterflowers on an exhibition in Holland. I actually studied car design and then user experience, so the latter has really helped with marketing and presentation. Our markets are still mostly Beijing and Shanghai, but we’re expanding our channels and distribution. In the future I want to expand my business by continually exploring new and unique products, which I can provide to my existing customers.
你觉得创业是什么滋味?How are you finding being an entrepreneur?
创业很难,连死的心都有了了!我不是一个天生的商人,我是一个设计师!但总有一股无形的从商力量推动着我。我对任何新事物都很感兴趣,这也是我对这种花如此感兴趣的原因,它如此新颖有趣,可谓自带流量。我也对让人们生活更轻松的产品感兴趣——基本上所有为懒人设计的都符合!我的设计老师用这样一句话概况:设计史就是一部懒人史。
It’s hard, it’s killing me! I’m not a natural business person, I’m a designer! But there’s an intangible something about business that pushes me. I’m really interested in anything that’s new, and that’s why I’m so interested in this flower; it’s so new and interesting that it practically advertises itself. I’m also interested in products that make people’s lives easier – basically stuff designed for lazy people! My design teacher used this phrase: The history of design is the history of lazy people

How has naked Hub been for you?
裸心社有最好的咖啡!此外,人们总是好奇我们的产品,也愿意帮助我,我也不知道为什么。有一次我试着在裸心社展示我们的产品。因为它从一个球茎开始,需要一点时间才能长出来,所以看着人们的反应从觉得奇怪到快乐满足,真的很有趣。
Naked Hub has the best coffee! Also people are always curious about our product and so they’re always trying to help me, I don’t know why! I tried to conduct an experiment in the shared space, by displaying our product. Because it starts as a bulb, and takes a little while to grow, it was really interesting to see how people’s reactions turned from thinking it’s strange to one of delight, as the flower grew.
