Everyone knows Fuxing Lu for its shady, tree-lined streets and the Art Deco garden villas half-glimpsed through fancy ironwork fencing. But Fuxing Lu is much more than those beautiful buildings carrying on the glorious old time of Shanghai. For us, Fuxing Lu today is a cultural landmark full of distinctly musical elements.

Here is a little map of the landmarks within easy walking distance of our naked Hub@Fuxing Lu. On the next sunny day, give yourself a guided tour!
597 Fuxing Zhong Lu: Shanghai Culture Square

Pause here for a moment - this peaceful and quiet neighbourhood was actually born from 80 years of turbulent history!

This square was formerly called Yi Yuan and it was the famous dog race track of Shanghai.

It was called the biggest gambling house in the Far East, with capacity for 20,000 people!

When the races were on, it would fill up with people.

There were also hotels, restaurants, dance halls, and cinemas.

The dark history of Fuxing Lu was eclipsed with the arrival of New China. Subsequently the building was destroyed by fire during the Cultural Revolution. From the ashes there emerged one of the biggest flower markets of China. In 2005 the municipal authorities moved the flower market and it has now become a modern cultural palace amidst green trees.

1186 Fuxing Zhong Lu: Shanghai Grand Theater

The Shanghai Grand Theatre, previously known as the Shanghai Cinema, is one of the oldest in Shanghai. Its 74 years of history hark back to the very beginnings of cinema in China. Currently it is undergoing a 3-year renovation and will be re-opened at the end of March 2017.

Today’s Shanghai Grand Theatre still preserves bits of its predecessor’s features but with a beautiful, modern design.

The roof of the main hall, which appears heavy, actually is made of an aluminium honeycomb structure which lightens the load. Three skylights of different shapes bring natural light in the hall, thereby bringing the space closer to nature.

In homage to the past, the first performance will be of Yuanye - a well-known opera. It will be followed by different kinds of performances, such as classic plays and innovative Chinese operas.
